Do Fire Ants Go Away in Winter in Alabama?

Short answer: No, fire ants do not go away in an Alabama winter. They move deeper into the ground and go quiet during cold spells, but the colony and the queen survive. As soon as we get a warm stretch, they are back at the surface.

Come December the mounds seem to disappear, and people figure the cold finished the job. Then March rolls around and the yard is dotted with mounds again. The ants were never gone. They were just waiting it out.

Where they go when it gets cold

Fire ants do not hibernate exactly, but they slow way down when it is cold. The colony moves deeper underground where the temperature is steadier, and the queen stays protected down there. On a warm winter afternoon you may even see them come up to soak in the sun near the surface, then drop back down when the temperature falls.

Why our mild winters matter

Alabama does not get the kind of sustained deep freeze it would take to seriously dent a fire ant population. A cold snap might kill a few ants near the top of a mound, but the heart of the colony rides it out just fine. Our winters are simply too short and too mild to be a real control method.

Winter is actually a good time to plan ahead

Because the colonies are still alive, the work you do in late winter and early spring pays off. Treating before the colonies ramp back up means you knock them down before they spread and bud into new mounds. Waiting until the summer cookout season to start puts you behind.
