Do Mosquitoes Go Away After the First Frost in Alabama?
Every October somebody tells me, "Once we get a frost, we are done with mosquitoes." I wish that were true. In Alabama it is more like a slow fade with a few surprises.
What a frost actually does
A light frost knocks back a lot of adult mosquitoes and slows the rest. But frost is a surface thing on one cold morning. The next afternoon hits the seventies, the sheltered spots in your yard warm up, and the survivors get busy again. It takes several hard freezes in a row to really thin them out.
Our weather keeps resetting the clock
We get cold snaps and then a warm week, over and over, through the fall. Each warm stretch gives mosquitoes a window to breed in any water that is still sitting around. Leaf-clogged gutters, a plant saucer, a tarp with a sag in it. A bottle cap of water is enough for some of them.
What sticks around for winter
Some mosquito species do not need the adults to survive. They lay eggs in spots that dry out, and those eggs sit there through the cold and hatch when water comes back. That is part of why the first warm, wet days of spring can bring a surprise crop.
Your fall yard checklist
- Clean the gutters once the leaves are down, because a clogged gutter holds water
- Dump and flip buckets, wheelbarrows, kids' toys, and plant saucers
- Change bird bath water every few days until the hard freezes arrive
- Pull tarps tight so they do not make little ponds
- Check low spots and drain lines where water sits after rain
So when can you relax?
When the nights stay cold for a while and you stop seeing them at dusk, you are mostly in the clear until spring. If you are still getting bitten on the porch in late October, there is probably standing water you have not found yet. We cover where to look in what attracts mosquitoes to your yard, and our mosquito control program is built around Alabama's long season.

No. A light frost slows them down and kills some adults, but warm days in between bring the rest right back.
When do mosquitoes finally go away in Alabama?
They usually disappear after several hard freezes in a row, though warm spells can bring a few back in late fall and winter.
Do mosquito eggs survive the winter?
Some species lay eggs in dry spots that survive cold weather and hatch when water returns in spring.
