How Do I Get Rid of Tiny Ants in My Kitchen?

Short answer: Those little ants on the counter are almost always after moisture and sweet or greasy food. Clean up what they are feeding on, seal where they get in, and use bait rather than spraying the trail. Spraying the ones you see feels good but leaves the colony behind to keep sending more.

Tiny ants marching along the counter, around the sink, or across the windowsill are one of the most common calls we get in Alabama homes. They are frustrating because you wipe them up, and an hour later the line is back. Here is how to actually break the cycle.

Step one: cut off the food and water

These ants are foraging for the colony. Take away the reward and the trail loses its reason to exist:

• Wipe counters with soapy water to clean up crumbs and erase the scent trail
• Put away sugar, honey, syrup, and pet food in sealed containers
• Run the disposal and take out sweet or greasy trash promptly
• Fix drips and dry the sink at night, since moisture pulls them in as much as food

Step two: resist the urge to spray the line

Hitting the visible trail with a spray from under the sink kills the ants you see, but the colony is somewhere else, in a wall void or outside in the yard. Worse, some ant species scatter and split into more groups when they get sprayed, which can turn one trail into three. For kitchen ants, spraying the line is usually the wrong first move.

Step three: let bait do the work

A slow-acting bait is what reaches the nest. The workers carry it back and feed the colony, including the queen, so the whole thing dies down instead of just the foragers. Place bait near the trail, not on top of it, and leave it alone. It can look like more ants show up at first, which is a good sign, because that is them hauling it home.

Step four: close the doors

Once things quiet down, keep them out by sealing the entry points:

• Caulk gaps around windows, baseboards, and where pipes come through the wall
• Check the seal under exterior doors near the kitchen
• Keep mulch and plants from stacking up against the foundation outside
