When Does Mosquito Season Start in Alabama?

Short answer: In Alabama, mosquitoes usually show up in February, as soon as daytime temperatures hold above 50 degrees. The season builds through spring, peaks in the hot, humid summer months, and does not really wind down until October.

The Alabama mosquito calendar, month by month

• February to March: The first mosquitoes wake up once we get a stretch of days above 50 degrees. Numbers are low, but they are out.
• April to May: Spring rain fills up every low spot, and the population starts climbing fast.
• June to September: Peak season. Heat plus humidity plus standing water is the perfect combination, and this is when most folks get fed up.
• October: Activity drops off as nights get cooler, but a warm fall can keep them around longer than you would expect.
• Winter: They do not all die. Many species ride out the cold as eggs or hide in protected spots, then come right back when it warms up.

Why February instead of summer

Mosquitoes are cold blooded, so their activity tracks the temperature. The common rule of thumb is that they become active once it holds above about 50 degrees. In Alabama we hit that mark early and often, which is why our season starts months ahead of the national picture.

What you can do right now, for free

The single biggest thing you control is standing water. A mosquito only needs a small amount to breed. Walk your yard and dump out or fix anything holding water:

• Flower pot saucers, kid toys, and buckets
• Clogged gutters and tarps that pool water
• Birdbaths and pet bowls (refresh them every few days)
• Low spots in the yard that stay soggy after rain
